Kontron PCI-949 Full-Size PICMG 1.0 Embedded CPU Board

The Kontron PCI-949 is a full-size PICMG 1.0 embedded Single Board Computer (SBC) designed for industrial, telecommunications, networking and other long-life embedded computing applications. The board supports Intel Pentium III and Intel Celeron processors and is based on the Intel 440BX chipset, with Intel 440GX available on selected configurations.

The PCI-949 combines SDRAM memory, dual 10/100 Ethernet, PCI and ISA bus connectivity, IDE storage, optional CompactFlash, optional Ultra-2 SCSI and optional integrated graphics in a full-size PICMG architecture for use with compatible passive backplanes.

Intel Pentium III and Celeron Platform

The Kontron PCI-949 supports Intel Pentium III processors at 700 MHz, 850 MHz and 1 GHz as well as Intel Celeron processors at 566 MHz and 733 MHz. The standard platform uses the Intel 440BX chipset with 66 MHz or 100 MHz front-side bus operation.

Because PCI-949 boards were supplied in multiple processor and option configurations, the exact installed CPU should be verified from the physical board rather than assumed from the PCI-949 model number alone.

SDRAM Memory

Four 168-pin DIMM sockets support 100 MHz SDRAM. Standard Intel 440BX configurations support up to 1 GB of memory, while PCI-949 configurations using the optional Intel 440GX chipset can support up to 2 GB.

The memory architecture supports both non-ECC and ECC operation with appropriate memory components and platform configuration.

PICMG 1.0 Architecture

The PCI-949 uses the full-size PICMG architecture and interfaces with compatible passive backplanes through PCI and ISA bus connections. This allows the processor board to be serviced or replaced independently of the backplane and installed expansion cards.

This architecture is particularly useful in legacy industrial systems containing specialized ISA and PCI data acquisition, communications, machine-control or other proprietary expansion cards.

Dual Ethernet

Two Intel 82559ER Ethernet controllers provide dual 10Base-T/100Base-TX network interfaces. Dual Ethernet connectivity makes the PCI-949 suitable for industrial communications, telecommunications and network infrastructure applications.

Optional Ultra-2 SCSI

Selected PCI-949 configurations provide an Ultra-2 SCSI LVD/SE interface supporting transfer rates up to 80 MB/s. Because SCSI is an optional feature, its presence should be verified on the specific PCI-949 board being replaced.

Optional Integrated Graphics

Selected PCI-949 configurations incorporate a Chips & Technologies 69000 graphics controller with 2 MB of SDRAM video memory. The graphics subsystem supports analog CRT output for embedded and industrial display applications.

IDE and CompactFlash Storage

Two EIDE interfaces support up to four drives with PIO Mode 4, Bus Master IDE and Ultra DMA/33 operation. An optional bootable CompactFlash module can interface through the secondary IDE channel for applications requiring solid-state storage.

Industrial I/O

The PCI-949 provides two serial interfaces, with the second serial port configurable for RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 operation. Additional interfaces include USB, parallel, floppy, PS/2 mouse and keyboard connections.

Replacement Considerations

When replacing a Kontron PCI-949, verify the complete assembly number and hardware revision printed on the original board. Processor speed, Intel 440BX or 440GX chipset configuration, installed SDRAM, SCSI option, graphics option, CompactFlash configuration, BIOS revision and passive backplane should also be checked.

Different PCI-949 configurations may not contain the same processor, memory capacity, video or SCSI options. Matching the original board configuration is recommended for validated industrial and legacy systems.
